Healthspan & Flu Meds...

There's a continuum between quality & quantity.   Most opt for the most over the best.   I want the most candy over a single bite of the best.  But that shouldn't be the case when it comes to a person's life.  Lifespan is how long someone will live.  But another concept healthspan or healthy life expectancy, is how long the individual will life in a mostly healthy state absent of chronic illness or injury.

When it comes to HIV, new meds have led to a near normal lifespan.  That isn't always the case for healthspan.  Many with HIV+ age faster than normal & face health issues earlier or more intensely; cognitive decline or increased susceptibility to some cancers.

According to this piece, this is due to the inflammation caused by HIV even when suppressed.  HIV impacts the bodies ability to fight.  The research reported a sugar molecule in the body called glycans help control inflammation.  While glycans dip as we age, it can be worse for women as the enter menopause.  But in HIV+ people these glycans levels lessen & with that their ability to control inflammation.

Research is studying a medication to inhibit this effect.  A group of meds referred to as sialidase or neuraminidase inhibitors can lessen degradation of glycan levels.  These compounds are found in common anti-flu meds such as Tamiflu.

This research is in the very beginning, but could prove very useful.  They aren't promoting flu meds as a treatment for HIV related inflammation.  They're saying the chemicals in these meds could be lead to new treatments for the condition.  Which could impact a host of inflammation induced ailments.

Give it a read.  Take care.

HIV Meds, COVID, The Flu...

I woke up feeling like crap, so this will be a short post.  I did find this piece, it concerns COVID's interaction with some older HIV meds & the flu.  Like many diagnosed when I was, my 1st meds were a cocktail of pills.  Among those was a protease  inhibitor.  I was on a few back then, now I'm  not on  any.  According to this article, these meds lessened COVID infections rates & severity.

The other point was that a combination of COVID & the flu was dangerous.  These people had a higher chance of severe illness & death.   So, get vaccinated against COVID & the flu.  If not a combination case could be highly damaging or deadly.

That's all for now, take  care.

Recovering...

We got our flu shots yesterday & that was rough.   The shot was fine, but a later, it hit. I don't react to every flu shot, but I did this year.  I felt like a sudden case of the flu.  I feel better now, but I'm still worn out.  Well, it needed to happen & it did.

That's about it for now, more tomorrow. Take care.

Failure & Success

Short post over a COVID-19 development.  Health officials were using HIV meds to treat coronavirus.   It didn't work well.  According to this piece, a Japanese Flu med called Avigan is faring better.  It's  speeding the rate of recovery.

The 1st approach didn't work, but another seems to be having success.  That's how research goes.  Hopefully, this will slow the spread down & allow for people to recover.

Take care & more tomorrow.

Possibly Sick...

The friend my roomie visited last Thursday called with news she'd been to the ER for the flu.  This could be problematic, she has a child & an infant.  My roomie was over there during the possible incubation time.   The virus normally incubates between 1 - 4 days, but can take longer in some people.

Now, my roomie is having to watch her own health.  So far, there's been no sign of the flu.  I hoping it doesn't show.   I've had my flu shot, but it's not working well this year, only somewhere between 25 - 50% effective according to most things I've read.

It'll mean a quick trip to the doctor if she shows nay signs.  Then I'll have to watch myself.  With any luck, her friend contracted the virus after she was visiting.   We'll just have to wait & see.

The problem right now is we've both been feeling a little under the weather already.  Mostly seasonal  crap, nothing flu-like so far.  Hopefully, we'll stir clear of it.

Feeling Off...

I got up early & made it to my appointment this morning.  I hate waking up early when it's dark.  I'm morally opposed to rising at dark o'clock.

The appointment went well.  I got my flu shot & my lab scripts.  I picked up something ot eat & went home.

We ate & then put put trash.  I'm exhausted.  I barely got the trash to the curb.  I noticed another couple of fie ant mounds.  I dealt with those & went back inside.

I'm achy & tired.  My allergies are going hard,  I'm probably shot for the rest of the day.  I'm not a fan of this time of the year. Or any time of the year that has allergens for that matter.

Errands Over...

At least for the moment we've caught up with the beginning of the month stuff.  The 1st of bills are paid & the rest will be handled tomorrow.   We handled some shopping this morning & it wasn't fun.  The 1st weekday of the month had the stores packed.

The weather is shifting towards the nasty again.  It certainly feels like it.  My head is stuffy & slightly feverish.  I'll be saying hello to several hot teas today.  I managed to get my flu shot handled this morning.   All this early morning running about on an empty stomach has left me a bit tired.

Breathing Rough...

The change in the seasons is really catching up with me.  The allergens are still high & the atmosphere has is more conducive to breathing issues.  I'm having a lot of sinus drainage & clearing my throat a lot.  Cold & Flu season is almost upon us.   I need to go get my flu shot.

For someone with HIV, keeping tabs on respiratory things is very important.  We're susceptible to ailments such as colds, flu, bronchitis & pneumonia.  My breathing affects how I function & how well I sleep.  If my sleep is off, I'm off.   My health is affected by these things, so I try to pay attention to them.

Right now, I'm just dealing with some aggravated sinuses.  Around the 1st of the month I'll get vaccinated for the flu again.  I know some people are against vaccinations.  But I think not getting 1 is a bigger risk for a + person.

Do you have your shots up to date?  Flu. Pneumonia, Tetanus, etc...  When's the last time you were tested for TB?  These are important things for everyone, but especially someone living with HIV or other chronic illnesses.  If you don't know the answer to these questions, you should get your shots up to date.

Your Beliefs VS My Health...

I don't care who you are, your beliefs should not be allowed to affect my health.  This article discusses how hospitals are cracking down on health workers who refuse to get their flu vaccinations.  There have been a number of firings of people working these fields who have refused the vaccine.  The reasons they've cited have included:

  • Allergy to the vaccine
  • Religious/Ideological issues
  • Skepticism over the vaccine's efficacy
Let's start with the allergy issue.  If you are truly allergic to the vaccine, I honestly doubt the hospital administration would fire you.  They wouldn't want to get sued or be found liable for anything that happened to you.

As for the issues of beliefs.  If you don't like what goes on in the medical world or it somehow offends your delicate sensibilities, then get the hell out.  I should not be unduly exposed to an illness because your beliefs have left you vulnerable.

As for skepticism over the vaccine's effectiveness.  Are you a medical researcher?  Can you be in any way certain the vaccine doesn't work?  Are you an immunologist?  Most likely the answer to all of those is, "No." I find most people in this category to be of the same vein as doomsday preppers & zealots.

I agree with the ethicist cited in the article.  An individual's rights are trumped by their obligation to protect their patients from harm.  Think of it this way, you have a situation involving many people whose immune systems are comprised, be they +, elderly, cancer patients, etc...  Now an individual decides that he/she is above it all & shouldn't be required to get a flu shot.  That decision puts every 1 of those people at risk for contracting the flu.  An illness that can & does kill.   If any of those people died from that exposure, the person refusing the vaccine would be at fault.

To wrap this up.  If you can't bring yourself to get a flu shot, then stay the hell away from the sick people.  Individuals may have their reasons for not getting the vaccine, but once they become healthcare workers, their option not to be inoculated, should go out the window.
