Hello July...

Hello July, I hope you're a good month.  The last day of June turned out to be decent day for me, even it wasn't for anybody else.  For over the last decade, no matter the state of my health or well being, I did the majority of the work around the house.  That hasn't changed much.   I've made a decision, when I can I will make things easier on myself.

Yesterday had been the 1st day in a long time, all of June that I was having a decent day.  I wasn't sick, upset or seriously uncomfortable.  I planned on making sure I got through the day like that.  I made a decision that wasn't well received.  I did something early so I knew I'd feel like it.  Either way I was going to have to do it, no one else would.  But my choice did not please the house.  Oh well, I guess someone else could've undone it, but that would've required effort.

I could've let the reception bring me down.  But I decided to mostly ignore it.  I did what was best for me at the moment.  I was the only person that was going to that.  For the most part I had 1 decent day in June, even if others didn't.

It'd be nice if there were more decent days this month.  Maybe others can get on board.  If not, I can't make them.  I have enough issues of my own to tackle.  That's the thing, I'm the person taking care of me or at least trying to.

Take are.  May the month be kind.

Concerns...

I saw a few articles today over important topics.  Each piece concerned what some might consider less developed countries.  They presented their cases why we should be concerned, if not outraged, over the lack of action concerning HIV in these areas.

We should be concerned with people not receiving HIV care.  However, I can't be overly involved in a situation half a world away.  I can't be concerned when there are places in our country, as economically depressed.   Places where little help comes, because this is the US.  Places where conservative, religion zealots denounce & reject federal monies to fight AIDS, because of their beliefs.

While I'm sympathetic to people in other lands dealing with HIV.  I'm more concerned with what's nearly right on my doorstep.  I have to wonder how long it will keep its distance.  How long before it's a direct threat to me.  Those people in far off lands are an abstract.  Actions in southern states like Tennessee are a reality.  Memphis is just over 300 miles away.  These other places are 1,000's of miles away across oceans.

Stop telling me how well I have it.  Stop telling me to focus on issues around the world, when danger is so much closer.  Don't ask me to sacrifice my well being for people across the world.  I won't do it.

Making HIV Primary Care...

I read an interesting piece this morning.  It asked, would moving HIV treatment to a primary care level lower stigma?  It went on to address the benefits of having HIV handled by a primary care physician vs a specialist.  The points were numerous, including comfort, adherence, but most of all, normalizing HIV care.

Will that address all the stigma associated with HIV? No, it wouldn't, but it'd be a huge step.  For me, the idea of removing the specialist & dealing with the remoteness of my situation, would be great.  At this point, I either have to travel hours both ways or depend on telemedicine.  I'm very thankful for telemedicine, but it's not the same.  I don't like talking about my health that much & even less over a video call.  It's just a little weird for me.

I hope this happens.  I think it'd help a lot of people, myself included.  Making things feel everyday when it comes to medical issues helps normalize matters, calm them down.  That's it for now.

No Cares Given...

It's another Cheap Chocolate Day After Holiday.  I have to go shopping this morning, I might get lucky.  Tomorrow will be bill day & the week is looking a little busy.  I hoped the rain we've had would have knocked down the allergies.  That didn't happen,  I think the rain actually made it worse.  Read yesterday that there is a 2nd wave of flu going on in the US & of course Oklahoma is seeing some of the worst of it.  Just great.

Articles concerning HIV rates & the needs of people living with HIV are a constant online.   The problem, most people don't read them, unless the title is click-bait & then the reader is usually just irritated.  The issue here is simple, people fighting HIV & providing aid for those with the virus need other people to be concerned about their cause.  But, most aren't & they aren't going to until they are directly affected.

When it comes to HIV, civil rights, climate change & the like, most people like to talk a good game, but honestly have very few cares to give on the matter.   For some, it's just these people are tapped out & have little give anything.  Other people are asshats & have no F's to give about anything other than themselves & their pet causes.

As hard as it is, when dealing with HIV or the like, on a personal or global level, the tactics have to change.  We have to acknowledge most people just do not care.  Some can't, some are just vile egos bobbing around in meatsuits.  We have to learn to & adjust to doing as much solo as we can.  Beating our head against the walls these people create is exhausting & exasperating.   Most people will never help anything other than themselves, some won't even do that.

It's awful.   If we accept they won't help, then maybe we can move on to develop strategies that don't require them.   It may not always be possible.   But where it is, we have to accept these people will likely never come through for anything.  Whether it's apathy, burnout, hate, ideology or whatever the reason, we have to accept this is the reality of these people & we aren't changing it with information or spin tactics.

All we can do is move on & do the best we can.

Conflicted...

We often have celebrities or at least semi-famous people announcing their whatevers.  They tell us they're gay, they're +, they're trans, they're this, they're that, etc...  Why am I conflicted?

When these shining star types announce something like this it acts like a lightning rod on these hot-button topics.   Oh, Mr/Miss Jenner is trans & transitioning.  Oh this singer is gay or that poet is +.  I get what's going on.  They've made themselves a poster child for their whatever.   But why?  Have they actually done it to help awareness?  Have they done it to boost they're image & ratings?  Is it both or something else?  Does it matter?

I think what matters more,  is why do everyday people even care?  I get it if you personally are part of this celebrity's whatever.  If you're gay, + or whatever, it might help having someone out there you know is going through the same thing as you.  I get that.  But those famous people aren't going through the same thing as you.  They really aren't.

I follow a Facebook page dedicated to Lyme.   Its a very difficult disease to treat since most doctors don't want to recognize Chronic Lyme & insurers won't cover it.  Most people who develop Chronic Lyme have to go without treatment.  They can't travel the literal thousands of miles it may take to find a doctor willing to risk treating them.  They can't afford the tens of thousands of dollars treatment will cost.  So they suffer.

That isn't the case for rich/famous folks.  The Lyme page showed a month's worth of meds for Avril Lavigne who suffers from the ailment.  It an amazing amount of drugs covering half a dining room table.  But she can afford to travel to these places & get those treatments.  Am I condemning her?  Not at all, she's got to do what she can for herself.  But, that proves when the rich & famous have a condition, its nothing like when a poor, unknown has it.

Most people really don't care about anything that isn't present in their lives.  Maybe they just don't have the motivation, information or the energy.  A lot of people act removed from everyday issues of other people until they come closer to home.  Oh, I got into Cancer runs because my mother had cancer.  I got active in crisis line after I knew someone who  _____.  I finally got tested for HIV after someone I met told me they were +.

It doesn't always take a direct exposure to motivate us.  Some people feel prompted to act when a celebrity they follow admits their whatever.  Brenner & Cox are pushing trans issues into the lime light.  At least annually some artist announces their HIV status.  We find out some tragic story behind an actor.  Then we're amped & ready to do something, for at least the next week or so.

Why is it we can feel this pseudo-empathy for people we don't even know, but can't feel anything about those suffering in our own backyards?  What of the homeless you see everyday?  What of the abandoned animals?  What of the elderly with no one to help?  Where's all that F'ing empathy then!?

I get that these people coming forward with their fame can promote awareness.  I do.  But all that does is tell the rest of us what you really think.   Maybe if we'd been rich or famous, we could've gotten better treatment.  Maybe someone would've gave a damn.  I know, nothing new there.   Time to face it people, you don't really care, you're just following whatever's trending.

None of this is ever going to change.  Not until people can care about a subject they have no direct interaction with in their lives.  It doesn't matter if its abuse, disease, addiction, discrimination or whatever.  Until we can find it in ourselves to care for those we can't directly relate to, then this lack of empathy will continue.  I don't have high hopes for us.

Not saying I'm any better.  But, this is why I'm conflicted about celebrities announcing their whatevers.   I wish these people well with their issues.  But what about everyone whose stories we'll never hear.  Are they less important, because they weren't known by more people?

Wow. Just Wow...

I believe in giving recognition where its deserved.  This article talks about a woman who deserves acknowledgment.   This is the story of Ruth Coker Burkes, also known as the cemetery angel.   This is something you need to read.  Its about a woman from Arkansas & her headlong collision with a patient with GRID aka AIDS during the early years of HIV.   It  tells of how this encounter changed her life & how she helped others.
