The 4th - Sights, Sounds & Smells...

The 4th is here.   That means a lot of noise, lights & odorous smoke.  Some fireworks are pretty & fun to watch.  But weeks of preamble sort of cheapen the main event.  It's like a concert with a barely OK main band preceded by dozens of unknown openers.

We don't have anything planned.  I can look out & see some of the show if I want.  Eventually the smoke will be an issue.  I hope those celebrating have a good holiday.

That's all for now, take care.  Happy 4th.

The 5th...

There'll still be lingering fireworks for a bit, but the holiday has passed.  It wasn't all that great either.  Each year the fireworks get smellier, smokier & do less.  When we 1st moved to this house, we could sit on the porch & watch the show.  It'd easily clear the treetops by 2 - 3 times.   There'd a loud rumble boom & then the lights.  Then unfortunately, the smoke.  Each year, the lights in the sky got lower & the treetops obscured more of the show.  Last night, unless I looked at a very specific angle, the fireworks were completely concealed by the trees.  The booms were louders & the air was filled with more smoke & odors, but the lights were hidden.

Just like with everything else, the show has gotten more expensive.  While the event happened, the pyrotechnics were much lower quality.  They paid as much or more for the show & got less each passing year.  In a few years, it'll just be sparklers on a podium.

All the 4th brought us was noise, litter & smoke.  My head is dealing with the aftermath this morning.  My eyes, nose & throat are hating it.  Glad this only happens once a year.

On to other news, this article, actually an abstract from the National Library of Medicine of the NIH.  Deals with the idea that even if a cure for HIV were found, it wouldn't solve everything for those living with the virus.   This is something I've personally thought & worried about.  They made 4 points.  1) a cure for HIV would not deal with health damage already incurred from or exacerbated by the virus.  2) you'd still have to deal with the stigma of being the person who had HIV.  This could make reentering "normal"  life difficult or impossible; try finding a job after a decade with no work experience due to being HIV+.  3) People who were cured could lose all public assistance leaving them more economically vulnerable.  4) There's no guarantee a cure would be available to everyone.  Without the means to aid people who've been living with HIV for years of decades, a cure could be more problematic than the virus.

That's it for now.  Hope you had a good holiday.  Give the article a read.  Take care.

Happy 4th...

The lights, sounds & smells of fireworks have been here for a bit.   This is the day, after this they should dwindle.  To those who celebrate it, have a Festive 4th.   I've not been much into any holidays for a while & this is no different.  Some of the big displays are pretty, but they get smaller, lower & smellier every year.

That's all for now, take care, happy holiday.

The 5th...

The 4th happened & we've made it to the 1st Friday of July.  I'm a little irritated.  The trash was taken out but the garbage men didn't show.  It had to be brought back.  Normally, there's a posting about a no run week.

There fireworks showed up last night.  The neighborhood was lit up & the kitten wasn't happy.  Millie, our older, more wise cat, didn't care about the noise.  The city's display gets smaller every year.  It's briefer, has less variety & hardly any height to it.

We made it to the 5th.  There are few more bills to handle & then shopping.  After that, the weekend looks to be a little cooler.  We never did get the rain that was predicted.

That's it for now.  Take care.

The 4th...

The holiday is here & so there's no mail or bank.   It's been odd this year.   Normally a few weeks before the 4th, the bangs start going off in our neighborhood.  Not this year.  Some people have moved in & out, but not that many.  There haven't been hardly any sounds of fireworks until last night.   Even that wasn't much.  It was uncommon enough, we wondered what it was for a bit.  Maybe fireworks are too expensive this year.  Maybe people are just too hot & tired.  There's still tonight & a bit.

It happened, we actually hit 100°.  I'm not happy about it, but it happened.  The lawn guy actually mowed yesterday.  He came on the hottest day we'd had so far this year.  It's done.  Maybe as hot & dry as it is, the lawn will die back some.

That's all for now.  Take care & happy holiday.

The 7th 2nd...

We've made to the 7th month of 2024.  It's not been as bad as 2023, but it hasn't been a fun ride either,  Being an election year, it has the potential to become a lot worse.  It'd be nice if all the conservatives would just drop dead before then.  That'd be party time.  Maybe this won't turn out to  another sucky year,

Tomorrow is bill day & then the 4th.  It's been pretty quiet around here considering we're normally getting blasted by fireworks.  I've heard a few, but not many.

That's it's for now, take care.

Happy 4th...

The 4th is here & so is the noise & smoke.  While the fireworks can be fun to look at.  They're also really loud & smelly.  Some of the smoke off them, just stinks.  I know they have some sulfur components, but this is worse than the bad egg smell of sulfur.

While they're here, we'll try to enjoy them.  It'd be nice have a kind with less smoke & stink.  Still, they are pretty & make fun memories.

Whatever you're doing today, take care & have fun.

Bang, Lights, Smoke, Litter...

Well July is here & since the 4th is midweek, some people have started with the fireworks early.  There've some pops here & there over the last couple of weeks, but nothing big.  That changed last night.  The neighbors had people over & celebrated.  They had people over & had a small, yet loud, celebration.

Fireworks are loud, but they bring people joy for a moment.  I'm not going to bring down their party.   I was that kid, running with fireworks & having a blast.  It was a small happiness I had as a kid.  I'm sure plenty of adults wanted to take it away from me back then.  I'm sure plenty of people want to stop it now.  Too many people delight in crapping on other people's moments of joy.  I wish the most tedious life on that kind.

Try not to be a Karen or a Bruce & don't bring people down.  Everyone deserves their moments.  Hell, we need them just to survive.

Take care, Happy 4th.

Hot Week...

We definitely hit the century mark yesterday & the upcoming week is supposed to be just as hot.  The 4th came & went.  It was fairly subdued compared to past events, unless you count the mass shooting at a parade.   The shooter proves the point, never trust the truly ugly people.

It's not going to be a fun week, but there's not much we can do about it.  So, hello AC.  Take care  & say safe.

The 4th...

The 4th of July is here, so enjoy it. Have your cookouts, play your music, set off your fireworks.  Then kindly put that stuff  away for a while.  People have be doing it for  over a week.  The novelty is gone.

I'm not normally such a gripe about this. But this year, the fireworks are really getting to my breathing.   They smell slightly different than they usually do.  I wonder if they changed  them or if I'm just reacting to them worse than usual?   I don't know.  Either way, my nose needs this stuff to go away.

Enough griping.  Have a happy holiday.  Take care.

Hello July...

Well,  it's July 1st.  It should be bright, but it's not.  It's overcast & muggy.  It's only 80, but at 80% humidity, it feels foul.  It  didn't  get that hot yesterday, but we had to turn on the AC.  Fireworks, humidity & mowing made it hard to breathe well.

I did a bit of edge work on the yard this morning.  It wore me out.  I'll be OK in a while, but for now I'm a little trashed.  That's it for me today, take care.

PS - Hello July, please be better than June.

Yuck...

Yesterday was borderline miserable.  It started dark & moved into storming.  The rain was supposed to last all day.  It was only supposed to make it into the 80s.  The rains stopped & the temps rose into the mid 80s.  Yesterday was like living in a giants arm pit.  The humidity was oppressive.  The air smelled like rotten eggs due to locals shooting off fireworks.  It was hot, smokey, sticky & smelled of sulfur.  What a great day.  Maybe today will be a little better.

It's Back...

The reprieve from the Summer heat ends today.  It's supposed to be hot until Sunday, then back down in the 80s.  It was nice to have the cooler days.  There was no need for the AC.

The heat has returned & with it came idiots.  Idiots that stay up all night making noise.  Fools that try to skateboard while half drunk.  It also means the return of fireworks.  It's not the idea of them that gets to me.  It's the repetition & smell.  That gets really annoying & can make it hard  to  breathe.  Sometimes our neighbors suck.

Take care.

Losing To Summer Already Or Something...

The 4th has passed for another year.  We saw fireworks  from home.   There's always plenty of folks setting them off.  We can set back & enjoy the show.   I'm not sure how much pleasure the cats or myself got out of it.

I spent a lot of yesterday somewhat nauseous.  I'm not sure if it was the heat, smoke, grass cutting, something else or all the above.  It wasn't pleasant.   I feel better this morning.  I hope it lasts.

This morning will round out the bills.  We could've handled it yesterday if not for the holiday.    It's always nice to have this part of the month handled.
