Recently, several articles have been running the idea male drug use is very causal in the spread of HIV to women. This is nothing new. People who use drugs have altered perceptions & practicing safe sex is not high on their list. These people have little impulse control. This kind of behavior has been shown to be especially prevalent in areas of economic hardship & higher gender inequality. Again, no news there.
Being poor can lead to hardships in life. Many choose to self medicate to deal with these difficulties. These people are more prone to engage in risky behavior. Sometimes, coercing others to do so with them. Thus HIV spreads quickly among the poor, drug users & those in some way disenfranchised from what we perceive as normal & acceptable.
