Happy Halloween...

It's Halloween & the end of October.  Even better, it's the end of Daylight Saving Time.   Whether it's Samhain, All Saint's., just more light in the morning or whatever else you're celebrating, best wishes.

So long October.  You were an odd month.  You were wet & chilly & then very dry & in the mid 90's.   Very indecisive of you.

My lab & eye appointments went well.  We're planning for the upcoming month & the holidays.  We've got most the gifts settled.  Now, just figuring out the little details, like what to eat.

Have a great night.  Bring your pets inside, they don't need to be part of the shenanigans.  Happy  Hunting.

Errands & Appointments...

Sorry, another short post.  I have to go shopping & then to Fort Smith for an eye exam.  Hopefully, it won't rain.  I don't know whether they'll dilate my eyes or not.  I know it might be needed, but I don't like it.   We'll see.  If so, my roomie will be driving home. Until tomorrow.

Short Post...

Running out to do have blood drawn for my November appointment with the specialist in Tulsa.  Tomorrow we'll go shopping & I've got an appointment with the eye doctor. Tomorrow's post will probably be short as well.  Oh well, stuff has to get done.

Dark Mornings Suck...

I can't wait until the 1st of the month.  Then Daylight Saving Time will end.   For a while at least, I'll have some light coming through my windows in the morning. I just don't do well without it.

The dark mornings have been compounded by some seriously, dreary-ass weather.  There hasn't been much rain, just a lot of clouds & the suggestion of rain.   This weather isn't pleasant.

I'm spending more time solo now & days like this aren't fun.   My roomie hates the Summer heat.  I'll take it, as long as it means I get light coming in the windows.

I turn on my overhead & a lamp as soon as I'm up.  It's not the same.  It's better than sitting in the dark, but nothing like sunlight.

I'll get blood drawn tomorrow.  Then on Friday after grocery shopping, I'll go to the eye doctor.   That's my plans for the week.

November In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

This is the last week of October & then we'll be off paying bills again.  Yesterday, was a bit of a bust.  Our cable box is on the fritz.  Our subscription is so limited we don't need it. It was part of some weird bargain bundle.  Turns out they don't use those anymore & wanted us to upgrade (charge more) to a new option.  We just decided to bypass the box & everything was fine.

My roomie will be busy today & tomorrow.  Thursday I'll need to go get blood drawn.  Friday will be groceries & a run to the eye doctor.  Soon after, new glasses will be ordered.   I can see, but these things are 2 years old now.   Then repeat for my roomie's glasses.

There was a bit in the articles about a new, modified protein from bananas, called BanLec.  It might eventually be used to fight infections like HIV & the flu.   It's still early in that game though.

Another article reported  a Brooklyn model can collect damages from the New York State Division of Human Rights.   The agency hired the model for a campaign.  The ads read, " I am Positive (+) and I have Rights."   2 tiny problems here, she isn't + & she wasn't portrayed as just a model.   She was portrayed as having HIV.  The judge declared she could collect damages because the agency portrayed the model as having a "loathsome" disease that would expose her to public stigma.

Talking about bananas is new here, but stigma isn't.  Some things might never change about having HIV.  Maybe the BanLEc thing will pan out.

Last Monday...

This is the last week of October.  The month rolled by quick.  We're headed headlong into the holidays now.   Nice seeing you again October.

I'll be glad when the time change happens.  I need more light in the morning.  I'm doing better this year, but I still hate this season's light issues.  It leaves me with stress dreams & anxiety.  I can handle the bright of Summer or the blinding white of a snowy day, but I hate dismal, overcast days.  They really do a number on me after a while.

I've got to get blood drawn this week & start trying to make an appointment with an eye doctor.  We both need new glasses.

Hope everyone has a good Halloween coming up.

Not Used To It...

I drove my roomie to a party last night.  She got there early & I went to run some errands & see a movie.  It's been a while since I'd been on a Saturday night in Fort Smith.  The stores were extra busy & so was every place to eat.  The theater parking lot was overflowing.   There was a pretty good wait in the ticket line.

I usually avoid these times & had forgotten how packed they could get.  I got through it, but it was a bit overwhelming with noise.  I think I'll stick with my matinees, less people.

It piddle rained all night & made the drive home annoying.  But my roomie had a good time.  Also, I now know I don't like Popeye's fish or popcorn shrimp. The errands went well, so there's that.

Chilly Outing...

Nothing much going on here today.  Well head to Fort Smith Later.  My roomie has a get together with her friends for an early Halloween Party.   I'll do some errands & see a movie.

The rain has kept lightly falling.  Everything is damp & chilly.  As long as the weather doesn't get a lot worse, everything should be set for later.

It's less than a week until Halloween.  8 days until 1 of the most important days of the year,  No, not All Saints Day.  It'll be the day that Daylight Saving Time ends.  After that, the holiday season will be officially a go.

Tulsa Doctor...

It looks like I'll be heading back to Tulsa for my specialist appointments.  After this next appointment, I'll be back with the doctor that saw while I was using telemedicine.  I could altered this appointment, but it would've changed other's schedules.  I try not to do that if I can help it.

It means a drive, but that's better than the alternative in Stigler.  I needed to get this handled.  It was nice to have a little good news.  Lately, things haven't been that great.

Being in a small town, being chronically ill, not being involved; it's all very isolating.  This last couple of years has seemed even more so.  I don't see much I can do about it.

At least it's finally raining.  Maybe I'll start feeling a little better.  That'd be nice.

Thursday Again...

Not much going on today. We went shopping today due to a schedule redo.  The store was busy.

My nose has been driving me nuts lately.  This weather has left me with a lot of nosebleeds.  Nothing too serious, but still annoying.  It kept feeling like I was going to have 1 while we were out shopping.  Fortunately, I didn't.

It's supposed to rain  this weekend.   I hope it does.  We need the moisture.   My sinuses need the moisture.  Other than that, not much is happening here.  I'll post more tomorrow.

Strange Realization...

I recently became aware of something that shouldn't bother me, but it's odd & a little disturbing.  When I was diagnosed with HIV, I was actually diagnosed as having AIDS.  My CD4 count was non-existent & my viral load was astronomical.   After I'd been on my regimen, my counts slowly improved.  I've only gotten above a CD4 count of 400 a few times, but my viral load is undetectable.

It's unlikely, I'll ever be at the target range for all my counts.  I started meds very late in the game.  Early application of a medical regimen does have a notable affect on long term health & activity levels.  I may never be where they want me to be or feel like I'd prefer.  Still, I'm better than I was, most days at least.

No matter what my numbers or how I feel, my diagnosis is still AIDS.  I tell people HIV, but actually according to legalities & health officials, I'm a PWA, a person with AIDS.   I guess I am, but still it's odd.

I remember how I felt in those days.  I could barely function.  I didn't want to eat.  Breathing was a challenge.  Any thing beyond sleep was a real effort.   Some days are bad now, some are very bad. But not like then, when they all were.

I don't tell people I have AIDS.  They freak out enough over HIV.  But as far as the medical community is concerned I am a person living with AIDS.  Damn, that feels weird.

Responsibility...

This article discusses the possible parole of a man who is imprisoned for criminally transmitting HIV.  The victim is fighting his parole.  He's just 6 years into a 25 year sentence. As it is, due to work programs, time served & the like, it's likely he'd be out by 2020.

Some feel it's to draconian to punish someone like this.  I'm not among them.  This man knew he was + & purposely engaged in activities that would transmit the virus.  He pulled the trigger & forever alter someone else's life.  He should pay.

It isn't draconian to make a criminal who causes grievous harm, sexually assaults or permanently traumatized another pay for their crimes.    HIV is no longer a death sentence, but it most certainly will end your current life as you know it.  Anyone who says otherwise is either ignorant or in denial.

People like this should have to serve the entire sentence.

Fatten It Up...

This article is about a new type of protease inhibitor that is nanofirmulated & then fat/protein coated.  The process was compared to dipping an ice cream bar in chocolate.  It's at least novel.

The research is showing this approach to have greater efficacy vs the virus.  It  has less general toxicity & requires less dosages.  It may take as little as 1 or 2 times a year for this medication.  That would be an amazing improvement.

The article goes into more details of the mechanics of the approach.  It's an interesting read.  Hopefully, this will work & be available relatively soon.

Low Humidity...

It's that time of year again.  The humidity has plummeted.  Our midday humidity levels the last few days have been in the mid 20% range.  That's way too low to be comfortable.

Lower levels of moisture in the air can have drastic impact on your sinuses & the actual nose itself.  I'm prone to nosebleeds during these times.   I've been dealing with them for the last couple of days.

Lower humidity levels can also impact your skin, eyes, hair & breathing.  Most people want an inside humidity of 30 - 50%.  During the winter, I'd opt closer to the 50%.

Things you can do besides use an actual humidifier:

  • Put a kettle or pot of water on to boil.
  • Take a shower.
  • Irrigate your sinuses.
  • Use artificial tears.
  • Use lip balm & skin lotion.
  • Don't take too hot of a shower/bath.
  • Pat you skin dry over rubbing.
  • Keep up your liquid intake.
  • Avoid harsh soaps & cleansers.
Those are just some ways to make getting through this upcoming season a little easier when dealing with lower humidity levels.  These things will also help in cold/flu prevention.   Fall is here & it brought Winter's dry air with it.

Abrupt Shift...

After really warm days, into the mid 90's F, the temperatures took a nosedive.   Last night our temps were int he low 40's with very low humidity.  This was not a fun change. It's taken me all day to get somewhat rehydrated.

If it stays this way, I can at least adjust to it.  It looks like we'll warm up to more seasonal temps in a couple of days.  Maybe then  things will settle down a bit.  Any hope for our rain total average for the month being met is pretty much gone.  We usually get about 5" & so far we maybe have a quarter of inch.  Unless we get soaked soon, that's gone & we didn't get September's average either.

Not much else going on, so I'll post more tomorrow.

Still An Issue...

I've talked a lot about the stigma of living with HIV.   This article details a lot of these concerns for HIV +  people.  There have been great strides made in the medical treatment of HIV, but not in the mindsets of the people.  This article goes briefly into the concerns, fears & actual cases of discrimination against people for no other reason than their HIV status.

I laugh when people say things are better.  Maybe in some places, but not in most.  This is another reason I dislike the idea of treatment as prevention,  Treatment does nothing to educate or further the understanding of the virus & those living with it.  That will only come with active education & communication.   No pill can do that.

The article's a good read.

Whoa Hot...

We're already in the 90's, it could reach the upper 90's.  I certainly hope not.  The southern wind is blowing leaves from the trees & sending them skittering down the road.  It's a neat sound, but the wind is also blowing dust & other crap into the air. Thanks a lot wind.

This is supposed to be the last day of the really warm weather.  After this we're supposed to drop down to the 70's.    I just want it to stabilize.  I'm over these days of 40+ degree temperature swings.  My roomie, the cats & myself are really over this weather.  It's doing no favors for any of us.

Hope you day is going well.

Couple More Days...

We were down to the 40's again last night & will probably see the 90's today.  It looks the same for tomorrow as well.  This really sucks.  These huge temperature changes are being really rough on me.  I feel like crap.

I didn't see any articles that looked all that great today.  Maybe tomorrow.  Even if I had, I'm not sure I could've written about them well.   I'll be glad when this weather crap passes.

Up & Down & Up Again...

The weather is weird.  Yesterday, towns near us hit the 90's.  Last night we dropped into the low 40's.   That's nearly 50 degrees.  We're supposed to repeat this throughout the  week. Just F'ing yippie!

This weather is seriously rough on me.  My head feels like someone filled my sinuses with concrete.  My body is very sore.  This sucks.

OK, Fall pick a weather pattern for a week.

Weather Goes Down, Then Up...

Not feeling the best this morning.  We were having some nice cooler days & then it heated back up.  The sudden change threw my body & sinuses for a serious loop.

We went shopping this morning & the store was packed.  Worse than that it was muggy & unseasonably warm.  Not a pleasant trip.

I'll just sit here with my hot tea & try to get my head to feeling better.

October Passing...

We're a third of the way through the month. All but 1 bill is paid & it just hasn't arrived yet.  We're a good way through having the holiday gifts bought.  It'll be nice having that out of the way.

Tomorrow is a really crappy holiday I don't celebrate, but it'll mess with the mail.  Some places are renaming it Indigenous People Day.  That I could handle.

In just 20 days Halloween will be here.  The next day is the end of Daylight Saving Time or better known as Fall-Back or give me my damn hour back day.  After that we're headlong into the holiday season.  Yippie.  Still, I think it'll go well this year.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all  you Canadians.

Gotta Go...

I've got a busy day ahead.  There are some errands to be ran & a movie to be seen.  This is a belated birthday movie for me.  It's the 1st time something's been on I've wanted to see since then.  I doubt I'll feel like doing this when I get back. Until tomorrow.

Kid's Stuff...

I don't normally write about kids.  They've never been my favorite people.  However, this article is written about HIV & AIDS for Kidshealth.org .

This piece went over some basic info at a kid's level.  I typed HIV in the site's search box & it gave back numerous other HIV related articles written for kids.  This site could be a very good tool for kids or their parents.

This may be a simple tool for info, but things like this are needed.  A lot of younger people have no one willing to discuss such things with them.  Some kids have parents that simply don't have the knowledge or ability to have such conversations.

Any thing that helps should be promoted.  This might not aid me, but maybe others will find it helpful.

House Issues...

There seems to be an never ending list of things needing tending to in this old house.  I suppose that's to be expected, but it's still very frustrating.  Not to mention extremely annoying.

We've developed a problem with our shower.  There was a possibility of a rather "rigged" fix, but at least it might hold another call to the plumber.  So far, the fix seems to be working.  I have no idea how long this will last.  We'll see.   I'm very thankful for Gorilla Glue.

This has been a tiring week,  Our schedule was altered so some things got moved up.  It's been a bit rushed after dealing with the brush this week & coping with the shower drama.  At least, it's being handled.

Not much else is happening right now, so this it for the moment.  Have a good day.

Yet Again...

This article, details how a nurse administering flu vaccinations to 70+  pharmaceutical employees  may have been infected with HIV &/or hepatitis.  The event happened in New Jersey & the people affected will have to wait months to know the status of their health.

The nurse failed to change the syringe after every injection.  Failed, makes it sound like it was a mistake.  This wasn't a mistake.  This was an assault on these people's health.  No health worker could possibly think it was safe to reuse a needle or syringe after this many decades of dealing with HIV.  This person should be prosecuted & have their license stripped.

The victims of the nurse's action will have a great deal of anxiety to cope with while waiting months for the all clear.  Some, may development HIV or hepatitis from what should be considered criminal indifference.  Yet another health worker who couldn't be bothered to follow protocol, prosecute this person.  Make an example out of a few of them & maybe others will get the hint.  Blood transmitted illnesses are no joke.

I'm Beat...

We finished the great shrubbery massacre & the remains have been hauled to the curb.  The people have been called to remove the evidence of our efforts.  I'm exhausted.

This might linger a few days.  Between the effort or hauling the limbs, the vibration of the power tools & the crap stirred up in the air, I'm spent.   At least it's done.  No more bush whacking, other than Facebook game style, until the Spring.

I can't focus on much more right now.  Have a good day.

Progress...

The 1st of the month stuff is underway.  It's always a rush, but there's a bit more happening this week due to schedule rearrangements.   Still, most of the bills are dealt with or will be this upcoming week.

The van project is done.  We won't be sure if it works until the van gets driven at higher speeds for a bit.  With any luck, it'll stick.

My doctor appointments are handled for the month,  That still leaves stuff for my roomie & we both need to get eye exams handled.   I'll get blood drawn at the end of the month.

That's all for now.

Waiting...

We're having to make a repair on some detail work on the van.  Of course, just to be difficult, this bit of trim can't be removed.  That might cause it to leak.

So, we're trying what the body shop suggested.  We're trying Gorilla Glue.  Here's hoping it works.

I'm a little nervous about this.  If it doesn't work, then we'll have to find other means to deal with that.  I'm not sure what those might be.

Until tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Halfway...

The shrubs are halfway cut back.  I need to wait a couple of days before proceeding.  This process is leaving me a mess. I've been sneezing all morning, my eyes are itchy & my breathing is rough.   It'll get finished, just more than likely midweek & not weekend.

We went shopping this morning.  It was very busy.  I still have a lot to get through today, so this is all for now.

Hello October...

So long September.  The 1st part of the month went well, but there were a few days with computer issues & doctor stuff that were no fun at all.   Still, it wasn't a bad month.   Until, next year.  Hello October.

I'm halfway through the shrub clearing.   I'll need help on the last half.   But, I did what I could on my own.   I could probably do the rest by myself, but it'd take forever. Not to mention, I'd be wiped out for a week.

Today is the 1st day in over 2 months that pollen.com hasn't had my area in the red zone for allergies.  Of course, I'm stirring everything up by trimming the bushes.  Oh well, has to be done.

Again, hy October.  Try to be a good month, will you?  It's the 1st of the month, so it's busy time again.
